An hour later, Connor, Raven, Chui, and all twenty-four of Bryndale’s villagers sat outside around the massive bonfire they’d made near the giant creature in the center of the village. Everyone had a piece of said creature—cooked well—in small cloth napkins.

Chui sniffed tentatively at his piece of meat and pressed his lips together. “I’m not entirely certain this is the best idea.”

“Of course it’s not.” From his seat on one of the fallen logs the villagers had worked together to place around the fire, the old Dragon Rider snorted. “The best idea would have been to capture it alive and study it. Come on, man. Don’t look so put out. Rabbit is rabbit.”

“I’m not entirely certain it is, Rider Alby.”

“Eh?” Connor squinted at the dragon doctor and his scrunched face danced with shadows in the firelight. “Don’t tell me you’re a vegetarian.”

“Not yet.”

“Good. You can call me Connor.” He stared at the vet and bit into his chunk of alleged rabbit without hesitation.

Seated beside Chui on another log, Raven leaned forward to peer around him and catch her grandfather’s attention. “What’s going on?”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“Connor.”

“Yes, yes. I know. An explanation.” The elder Alby sighed and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I know very little about this, Raven. Calista and I were making our rounds. I’d returned to Windroot Pass for a time once you left for your mission…” He frowned at the man beside her again. “Am I treading on classified territory here?”

“I’m informed, thank you,” Chui replied with a tight smile.

“I see. At any rate, the Ancient Ones at the pass told me they’d felt certain…nuances. Changes in the feel of things, if you will.”

“Like giant rabbit changes?” she asked.

“You know those massive dragons, Raven. They were hardly specific but they were slightly concerned. I said I would keep an eye out and Calista and I took our leave. We weren’t two hours in the sky before we noticed a…commotion.”

Raven studied her napkin full of meat. “Like a giant rabbit commotion?”

Chui snorted, and she darted him a flicker of a smile.

“Is this funny to you?” Connor raised a brow.

“Yes. It’s…a giant rabbit, Connor—that you were terrified of. With good reason, it would seem. That is unless all the bruises and scratches are from something else. A mouse, maybe?”

This time, Leander’s rumble of amusement joined Chui’s poorly stifled laughter from where he and Gruene had curled along the side of the largest hut.

“It most certainly was not a mouse.” Connor took another bite of rabbit meat and chewed furiously. “You saw its teeth. And I’ll tell you something else. I’ve been bitten by goats, batted by dragons, and kicked by horses. That…rabbit packed more of a punch in its hind legs than all three put together.”

Raven pressed her lips together and lowered her head, reluctant to upset her grandfather even more than they already had. “I can imagine.”

“Yes, I’m sure you can.”

After another long silence, she cleared her throat. “So that’s when you found the creature here and Calista dropped you off?”

“What? No, of course not.
